THE STARTING POINT

In Mumu Dad’s parenting perspective, shared enjoyment and the parent–child relationship are two important things to notice. They are reflections from experience, not a diagnostic scale or a promise of progress.

The clock does not tell the whole story

“I am there every day, but I do not know how it is going.” This is the uncertainty behind the original essay. Mumu Dad turns attention from simply counting hours to the child’s experience of being together.

What did we do, and how did my child experience being with me? Those are two different questions worth considering.

Notice enjoyment without demanding a performance

The original essay gives examples of games, chasing and shared laughter. Children do not all show enjoyment through laughter, speech or eye contact. Quiet company or choosing to continue an activity can also be worth noticing.

Use these moments to learn about your own child, rather than turning them into daily targets. One interaction without a response does not establish that a relationship is poor or that a parent did something wrong.

Reflect on one real moment

Think of a short moment from today. What was your child doing? How did you join? What felt comfortable, and when did it start to feel effortful? Might a little less demand or more time make a difference next time?

This is a way of bringing observation back into everyday life. Children have different support needs. Concerns about communication, development or health can also be discussed with professionals who know your child.

A question to take with you

Was there a small moment today that you both wanted to continue?
